MMO Lite: Dungeon Runners

Recently I was able to get a beta invite for a little game from Ncsoft called Dungeon Runners. This game has an interesting pricing model; its free to play. Of course paying gets you things you will want, but then the best its only $5/month. Smart move for this MMO lite.

After I received my invite it was time to run off and make an account send out a couple of invites, download the client and play a few hours.

Overall I was consistently amused. The game feels much like Guild Wars (with its common city zones / instanced play areas meets Diablo (frantic click to kill action). I think what I enjoyed most was how the whole game seemed like it was just on the edge of being a full out parody of other MMOs. I mean the first time you pick up something named “Airborne Ceremonial Locket of the Insubordinate Llama”, you just have to chuckle. And so far the whole game has that feel to it.

The only big thing missing, imo, is a guild system. They need a way for players to be part of a larger group, to facilitate communication and grouping with friends. Its unpolished and a bit lacking, but definitely fun.
